The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Painting Critique

2 November - 14 December | Mondays 7-9pm

Course Description

REGISTRATION CLOSED

“If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster”—Clint Eastwood in The Rookie

No more "idea art". No more "identity art". No more "political art". No more noodling or tiptoeing around. For seven sessions we will meet in class with a guest artist for a brief interview and to discuss painting as an intellectual craft. Some painters have very strong ideas while others have very strong craft—we will work to find the balance.

Each week 5 students will bring 3 paintings for a group critique with our guest artist.
Topics for discussion will include: image vs. surface; atmospheric vs graphic; direct and indirect painting; the role of drawing and composition; what looks new now?; the overrated; the original; decorative manners; style and social engagement; what is first class?; what might a painter might get away with?; why getting it right might not be very good?; and, how to keep it interesting?
